The Book Coven

Sadie by Courtney Summers

"She’s dead,” I whisper and I don’t know why this is the thing I choose to say out loud because it hurts to say it, to feel the truth of those words pass my lips, to have them be real in this world. But She’s dead is the reason I’m still alive.

She’s dead is the reason I’m going to kill a man.

Sadie begins with Sadie's sister Mattie being found dead. Sadie hasn't had an easy life in her isolated town and she's been trying her best to provide a normal life for her sister. After a police investigation that goes nowhere, Sadie decides to take matters into her own hands. With only some vague clues, Sadie hits the road to get revenge for her sister's murder. When a radio personality named West McCray hears word of Sadie's story, he starts a podcast to follow her movements and hopefully find the missing girl before it's too late.

First off, this is an amazing audiobook. It's full cast and because one POV is a crime podcast, it has some sound effects and everyone has their own narrator. I can't say enough how interesting and captivating it was to listen to and how much I loved it. Seriously, you have to listen to this in audio format!

As for the story, I loved it as well. The balance between the calm podcast guy and Sadie's emotional POV was really well done. I don't want to use the word raw because it's creepy but this story was raw as hell. It's dark and it's really heartbreaking but I enjoyed every minute of it. It's not an easy book to read and terrible things happen. Sadie is literally on a road trip to kill a man; bad things have happened and happen along the way, and I don't think it could have been any more intense than it was.

It was a terrible thing, sure, but we live in a world that has no shortage of terrible things. You can't stop for all of them.

It takes a serious book to actually hit me hard and make me feel something, and boy did this one hit me. Even ages after I've finished it, it still makes me want to sob. Highly recommend if you want to have your emotions punched.
